A sermon is an oral presentation by a live speaker to a live
congregation. It always involves a bit of interaction, even if it’s
just eye contact and facial expressions. Reading the text of a sermon,
then, is like reading the script of a play to yourself. The live,
communal experience is gone.
Nevertheless, please enjoy reading these text versions of sermons and
other presentations made at the UU Fellowship of Topeka during our
worship services. You may find that there are additional notes and/or
commentaries to the original text.

Getting through and beyond life’s struggles — Rev. Jill Jarvis
Joy and fulfillment are an intrinsic part of our human existence, but so are pain, suffering, and loss. As we face life’s unpredictability, we often turn to religion for comfort and strength. Our liberal religious faith offers no prepackaged beliefs or supernatural solutions. Yet in our faith we can find answers to the question of meaning and purpose in life, understandings to get us through and beyond life’s struggles. Jill Jarvis, ministerial intern, brings the message today.

Thoughts on the Winter Solstice — Rev. Lisa R. Schwartz
Our planet is actually 3 million miles closer to the sun in January than it is in June. Yet a small tilt in the angle of our imaginary axis, a mere 23 degrees, causes a major shift in worldwide weather patterns. How is it that winter’s cold and dark elicit stories and rituals that celebrate birth, rebirth, and renewal? And how do we regain our connection to this fundamental planetary event? Rev. Lisa shares thoughts on light and darkness at this Solstice celebration.

A homily — Rev. Lisa R. Schwartz
We start out life as dependent creatures, and our initial quest is to become independent. As we mature we see the transformational power of interdependence. What skills do we need to work on if we are to create a truly interdependent community?
