A sermon is an oral presentation by a live speaker to a live congregation. It always involves a bit of interaction, even if it’s just eye contact and facial expressions. Reading the text of a sermon, then, is like reading the script of a play to yourself. The live, communal experience is gone.

Nevertheless, please enjoy reading these text versions of sermons and other presentations made at the UU Fellowship of Topeka during our worship services. You may find that there are additional notes and/or commentaries to the original text.

Pray for Me

Prayer is an important spiritual practice for most of the world’s religions, but the role of prayer in Unitarian Universalism is unclear. Yes, a significant number of UUs have already firmly made up their minds on the topic. But if the “orthodox UU attitude” towards prayer is already decided, we can’t truly claim to be an open minded faith. Is prayer a concept that is irreparably broken, or is there a re-visioning process that can redeem the practice for at least some UUs today?

On Preaching to the Choir

Some even wonder if our eagerness to address social and political issues is simply a cover for spiritual vacuousness.
